How would I ignite a fire baton?

I have a fire twirling baton, but I don't know how I should light it. I've read that kerosene, gasoline, or a mixture of both should be used (which I don't think is a good idea.). I used lighter fluid the other day, which did not burn hot and didn't smoke (which is good.). Will lighter fluid work effectively? If so, how long should I soak the ends?
