Vietnam Question [Battle of Ia Drang]?

the battle of ia drang and the movie we were soldiers. In the final battle when the Huey's arrive and annihilate the nva, is that the way that they really overran the base? If not how close is it and how did the charge with bayonets really go. My dad is a vietnam vet. but I do not like asking him questions about vietnam because he does not like to talk about his bad memories about that war. He got to stay in a safe zone and rarley did combat while 3 of his freinds died. So i am asking you guys.
