Why is Hector considered the "better" character in the Iliad? ?

He was courageous and pious. His civic duty, working for the greater good of Troy was above his personal concerns (family etc.) Unlike Achilles, he was incredibly compionate and shows a main theme of the Iliad: family and love for his city.
